As a dedicated life-long learner, I am proud to be a part of CORE’s mission and serving the educational needs of my community. My name is Amy Andrews. I have always loved school and have continued going until I received my master’s degree in literacy. In the past I have worked as a teacher in elementary education with preschool and kindergarten students and adults through Job Corps. I have been with CORE going on five years now and love what I do. Working with my students and helping them reach their goals keeps me motivated to continue every day.  I love spending time with my family and friends, including my dog in my spare time. One last thing you need to know about me is that I love anything glitter and sparkly.

My name is Jess McMakin and I teach both ESL and ABE at the Mt. Morris site.  I’ve been teaching ESL to adults since 2007 and ABE since 2019.  I’m a NYS Master Teacher in ESL and have recently become a trainer for the BEST+ test for the area education networks.  My first language is English, but I also speak a bit of Spanish.  One of the things I like best about teaching ESL is that it exposes me to many other languages and cultures from around the world.  For all my students, both ESL and ABE, it gives me a sense of accomplishment to help them reach their personal goals.  I live in Livingston County with my husband, my daughter, and my three (very demanding) cats

Career Coach

I came to Literacy West following a career in higher education.  I completed my Ph.D. in 2013 and worked as a college professor from 2014 until 2022.  My experience teaching and advising students has translated readily into my work as a career coach, as I continue assisting people with the acquisition of skills to help them secure work.  I love helping participants in our programs gain independence and self-respect.  When I’m not working, I spend my time with my husband and our two daughters.  We expect to welcome a son this winter.
